Art Direction: Jennifer U Stern

This project was a redesign of the famous book by James Baldwin, a beautifully written novel of queer/black relationships in the midst of Harlem in the late 1960s.

I wanted this book to feel raw and provocative, drawing the viewer to open it up and figure out what this book is all about. A collage of roughly stroked lettering with a bluish hue felt appropriate to convey the uneasiness of the emotions and social conflicts that the characters are experiencing.
